Welcome and thanks for visiting
I am Steve Sturgeon. I am proud to represent the William S Hart District. We are focused on ensuring that all of our 22000+ students from every walk of life are attending safe, clean schools in our District as part of their learning experience.
Our community is a diverse population including several ethnicities, religious beliefs and socio-economic groups.
My job, like all Board Trustees, is to ensure that we provide the students and staff with the resources they need to achieve their success and prepare them for an ever-changing world.
Six comprehensive high schools in the William S. Hart Union High School District (Canyon, Golden Valley, Hart, Saugus, Valencia and West Ranch) plus Academy of the Canyons have been ranked in the top 12 percent of public high schools in the country by U.S. News & World Report.
The publication’s Best High Schools Rankings compared the Hart District’s high schools against more than 24,000 public high schools in all 50 states and the District of Columbia using six factors: college readiness; math and reading proficiency; math and reading performance; underserved student performance; college curriculum breadth; graduation rate.
The Hart School District is one of only 18 districts in the state named an “Exemplary District” by the California Department of Education (CDE), and the only district to be recognized within Los Angeles County.
The William S. Hart Union High School District, which serves over 22,000 students in grades 7-12, has been recognized by the CDE for its ability to produce one of the highest graduation rates in the state, as well as test scores 20 percent higher than students across Los Angeles County and the state.
“It’s the first time the district has received this award,” said Dave Caldwell, spokesperson for the Hart District.
Steve has volunteered for several different organizations serving them as a President, Chairman, Foundation Director or on an Advisory Board or Task Force such as for Sulphur Springs School District and Hart High School District or the Sheriff’s Foundation to name a few.
As a successful small business owner, he decided to give back to the community and became a Rotarian.
Six William S. Hart Union High School District schools were placed in the ranking of the top 5,000 STEM high schools for 2019, officials said.
Newsweek announced Friday the ranking honoring excellence in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics, according to the Hart District.
All six high schools are in the top 10 percent nationally, according to district officials.
According to the U.S. Department of Education, there are 26,407 public secondary schools and 10,693 private secondary schools, making a total of 37,100 secondary schools in the United States.
Steve was named as the 9th most influential person in Santa Clarita!
“Steve Sturgeon has been a longtime supporter of Santa Clarita Valley schools, as well as a successful entrepreneur in our community. His support of the nonprofit community is also part of what makes this community so great.”

Serving the Community
Over the last 20 years, I have served a number of local nonprofits in our community, including The Child & Family Center, The SCV Sheriffs Foundation, The Michael Hoefflin Foundation, the Santa Clarita Rotary Club and the Betty Ferguson Foundation. I have supported The Circle of Hope, The SCV Boys & Girls Club, SCV Senior Center and many others. Together, with Julie, we are committed to the betterment of the Santa Clarita Valley, its Families and its Businesses.
Serving the School District(s)
I began my involvement with the Sulphur Springs Union School District in 1995 as a Trustee on their Board of Education before being elected to the William S. Hart School Board in 1999. It was a time of significant growth in the Santa Clarita Valley and with growth, there were many challenges facing our schools in grades 7 through 12.
During my tenure, the Hart School District has built 6 new schools and done renovation or expansion on all of the 15 other campuses. We have opened a middle college campus, two Junior High schools and 3 High schools, all to meet the growth of the Santa Clarita student population.
My Focus, now and in the next term
The Hart District will always be focused on improving its educational programs both in quality and content. I, along with the other Board Members, will continue to enthuse and support the creative genius we have on our staffs across all classrooms and campuses. We will continue to be innovative, proactive, enthusiastic and accomplished. Our students are some of the best in the country and better than most in the County and State. We will continue to encourage student success, to allow them to be the best they can be.
The current COVID pandemic is a “bump in the road”. We, as a District, are working hard to overcome the challenges it has brought to the forefront. We will get past it and we will be better when we have done just that.
I am committed to helping guide the District to restore our services to the level we are accustomed to having and then move above and beyond. This is certainly one of the greatest challenges our District and education as a whole has had to face.
